Alexandria, MN – Coming off their most successful year on the field in 2011, the Alexandria Beetles will begin their 12th season of play in the Northwoods League on Wednesday, May 30th as they host the Thunder Bay Border Cats at 7:05 pm.

Keith Castillo former catcher for the Alexandria Beetles baseball team from 2007-2009 recently signed a minor league contract Saturday, February 19 with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Alexandria Beetles second baseman Mikel Alvarez (Florida Gulf Coast University) received the Rawlings ‘Finest in the Field Award’ for best fielding percentage at second base.

Alvarez, played two years with the Beetles and is entering his senior season at Florida Gulf Coast University. Alvarez had a fielding percentage of .973 during the 2010 season for the Beetles.

It took only one inning for the Alexandria Beetles to get their offense going as they put a four-spot up in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back, winning 6-5 over the Willmar Stingers.

Beetles shortstop Marcus Semien (Cal) arrived at Bill Taunton Stadium in Willmar just an hour and a half before first pitch and found himself in the starting lineup. The Cal Golden Bear provided the defensive stability the Beetles needed as they defeated Willmar 5-1 in game two of a three game series.

The Alexandria Beetles played their first ever game against the Willmar Stingers on Wednesday night and would like to have it back, as they gave up a lead and lost to the expansion franchise in extra innings, 7-6.

The Rochester Honkers gave the Beetles a taste of their own medicine in game two of their series, scoring two runs in the eighth inning to take a 3-2 lead and they would hold onto it, winning by the same score.
