Section champion Little Falls led the way with four players selected to the All-Section 6A team. The Flyers finished as consolation champions during the 2012 Minnesota State Boys Hockey Tournament and also had three players receiving honorable mentions.

In the sixth year of seeding the qualified teams, Hermantown was chosen No. 1 in Class A and Duluth East was chosen No. 1 in Class AA for the 2012 State Boys’ Hockey Tournament.

The Hawks of Hermantown qualified for the ninth time and are seeking their second state title. The Greyhounds of Duluth East are making their 19th trip to the tournament and are seeking their fourth state title.

Alexandria, Minn.—Zech Streed scored twice and Hunter Schneider iced the game winner as No. 7 Willmar stunned second-seeded Alexandria 4-3 during Tuesday’s Section 6A quarterfinal game at the Runestone Center.
 
Alexandria led 3-1 in the second period and had a chance to extend the lead when they received a penalty shot. However, Willmar goalie Derek Baker came up big when he rejected Jack Wensman on the attempt.
 
Baker’s save ended up sparking the Willmar rally.

The 27th Ted Brill Great 8 High School All-Star Hockey Festival is back at the Wakota Civic Center in South St. Paul on Friday through Sunday, April 1st – 3rd.

The Ted Brill Great 8 is a Minnesota Hockey tradition and features many of the finest high school senior hockey players in the state playing for their High School sections. The purpose of the Great 8 is to showcase Minnesota’s finest graduating seniors for possible opportunities at advanced levels of hockey post-high school.

The All-Section 6A boys hockey team was announced on Tuesday with section champion Alexandria and runner-up Willmar leading the way with six players honored.

Wadena-Deer Creek had two players receive honorable mention honors—senior forward Taylor Bienusa and junior defenseman Logan Meyer

Alexandria saw their state hockey tournament run end for the second consecutive year in the consolation semifinals when the Cardinals were blanked 7-0 by No. 3 Rochester Lourdes Thursday morning at the Mariucci Arena.

Senior forward Andy Benner tallied two goals and an assist and sophomore Alex Funk iced two goals for the Eagles (25-4-1), who advanced to the Saturday’s 10 a.m. consolation championship against Breck School.

Alexandria goaltender Ben Allen dives for the puck during the first period of the Class A state quarterfinal with Hermantown. The sophomore made some spectacular stops in the period but got rattled in the second period of the 5-1 loss Wednesday morning at the Xcel Center in St. Paul.

In the fifth year of seeding the qualified teams, St. Thomas Academy of Mendota Heights was chosen No. 1 in Class A and Eden Prairie was chosen No. 1 in Class AA for the 2011 State Boys’ Hockey Tournament.

The Cadets of St. Thomas Academy qualified for the sixth time and are seeking their third state title. The Eagles of Eden Prairie are also making their sixth trip to the tournament and are seeking their second state title.
