Six of the eight Class A teams that played last year have qualified again, while in Class AA there are only two teams qualified that played last year. Only one team, Detroit Lakes in Class A, is making a first tournament appearance.

Warroad earned the No. 2 Class A seed for its quest to defend its 2011 title. The No. 1 seed is last year’s third-place finisher, Breck School of Golden Valley.

Nicole Schammel and Annie Gorman both iced a pair of goals as Red Wing went on to defeat Alexandria 5-2 in the Class A consolation semifinals Thursday afternoon at the Ridder Arena on the University of Minnesota campus.

The loss eliminated the Cardinals (11-17-2) from the state girls hockey tournament.

Layla Marvin iced a hat-trick and goalie Shelby Amsley-Benzie stopped all eight shots as No. 1 seeded Warroad blanked Alexandria in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Class A state girls hockey tournament on Wednesday night.

The defending champion Warrriors peppered Cardinal goalie Stephanie Drown with 39 shots. Alexandria could not get a shot off at the Warroad net during the second period.

Warroad earned the top Class A seed for its quest to defend its 2010 title. The No. 2 seed is last year’s runner-up, Breck School of Golden Valley.

Coaches have completed the seeding process for the top four seeds of the 2011 State Girls' Hockey Tournament and the pairings have been drawn for their opponents, the Minnesota State High School League announced this morning.

Defending state champion Warroad earned the No. 1 seed in Class A, while regular-season powerhouse Minnetonka was seeded No. 1 in Class AA for the 2011 state tournament.

Third seed Alexandria earned a repeat trip back to the Class A State girls hockey tournament next weekend when they stunned No. 1 Fergus Falls 4-0 at the Freeman Sports Arena in Detriot Lakes Friday night.

It will be the seventh state tournament appearance for Alexandria, who finished fourth in the state tournament last season.

Halley Maas scored the only goal for the Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek Blue Devils as they were routed by third-seeded Alexandria 10-1 in the Section 6A quarterfinals Saturday.

It was the first goal of the season for the sophomore, as the Blue Devils were held to a season-low three shots in the game. Hayli Toenyan also picked up her first point of the season with the assist on the play.

Sam LaShomb scored a hat trick for third-seeded South St. Paul as the Packers skated past Alexandria for third-place in the Class A State tournament Saturday.

LaShomb found the back of the net on the Packers first shot of the game during a power-play. The sophomore added another goal at the 8:06 mark of the period.

The Cardinals’ Claire Illies netted her second goal of the tournament to pull Alexandria within a goal at 10:28.

Top-seeded Warroad easily dispatched Alexandria 10-0 in the Class A semifinals Friday afternoon.

It was a state-record 18th shutout of the season for Warroad, who lead 1-0 on a late first-period goal from senior Brook Story.

It was Megan Brettingen’s goal 16 seconds into the second period that ignited the Warriors’ four goal flurry in the stanza. Warroad went on to ice the game with five goals—one shorthanded and three power play tallies—in the third period.
