Menahga saved their best effort against Bertha-Hewitt in a game that really counted, as the Lady Braves stunned the Lady Bears 6-1 Tuesday to advance to the Section 6A championship game.

The South Subsection champion Lady Bears, who had defeated Menahga in a Park Region Conference doubleheader in the regular season by scores of 4-2 and 18-4, were undone by a five-run third inning outburst by the Lady Braves.

Prep Baseball: North Subsection 6A: Bertha-Hewitt eliminates Menahga 6-2
Ethan Bakken went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Dakota Aeling was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs as the third-seeded Bertha-Hewitt Bears used a five-run, fourth inning outburst to down sixth-seeded Menahga 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the North Subsection 6A playoffs Tuesday.

Menahga broke open the scoreless game in the top of the fourth on a RBI single by Stetson Burkman, but the Braves 1-0 lead would be short-lived.

Wolverine senior Dane Hoffman advanced to sections when he qualified in two events. He won the shotput with a toss of 42 feet, two inches and then blew past the state qualifiying mark in the discus by nearly 20 feet.

Bertha-Hewitt scored the insurance run on a wild pitch uncorked by Lady Pirate starter Jenny Swenson in the bottom of the fifth inning to escape with the 4-3 quarterfinal victory in the South Subsection 6A playoffs on Tuesday.

Swenson, who pitched six innings, suffered the loss despite limiting the top-seeded Lady Bears to five hits. The junior also had a good performance at the plate to help the eighth-seeded Lady Pirates pull out the near upset. She went 1-for-3 with a double, a run and drove in another as Verndale out hit Bertha-Hewitt in the loss.

Derrick Rude unleashes a pitch towards the plate during the diamond action on Friday night. Rude pitched a complete game, striking out 10 as the Wolverines rallied in the seventh to win 6-5 over Bertha-Hewitt.

Verndale dropped both games of the Park Region Conference doubleheader to Bertha-Hewitt by identical 10-0, five-inning scores Tuesday.

The Pirates couldn’t muster a run against some tough Bertha-Hewitt pitching and committed 13 errors in the first game, which led to a rough outing for starter Dustin Motchenbacher.

Verndale managed six hits against Bertha-Hewitt pitcher Dakota Aeling, with Isaac Schmitz going 2-for-4 for the Pirates.

The nightcap wasn’t any better for the Pirates, although they did cut down on their errors by committing two.

Area track and field teams converged in Frazee for the annual Daggett Invitational on Thursday with numerous individual participants garnering top placements for their respective school teams.

Amos Schmidt won the 110 and 300 meter hurdles and Kathy VanDenheuvel tied for second in the high jump for Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale. The Raider boys team finished sixth with 29 points while the girls were 11th with nine points.

Five local high school track and field teams in the Beyond the Bleachers coverage area participated in the Browne Invitational held at Wadena-Deer Creek on Thursday.

Staples-Motley was the top team with runner-up finishes in the boys’ and girls’ team standings.

Brian Huber led the Cardinal boys with three first place finishes. The freshman speedster won the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash and high jump events while teammates Jason Johnson won the discus throw, Brandon Larson the triple jump and Brandon Sterriker the pole vault.

Micaela Lausten hit a two-run shot in the sixth in the first game but the New York Mills Lady Eagles were swept by Bertha-Hewitt in the Park Region Conference doubleheader Thursday.

Lausten’s lone hit capped the Lady Eagles scoring in the opening game.

RaeAnna Salo tallied New York Mills’ first run in the third inning with a RBI single that scored Autumn Roberts for the short-lived 1-0 lead.

Bertha-Hewitt tied the game up in the fourth and then exploded for five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cruise to the 11-3 victory.

Jeremy Fretham hit a walk off homer in the bottom of the eighth to give the visiting Bertha-Hewitt Bears the doubleheader sweep in the 5-4 game two victory.

It was the second homer for Bertha-Hewitt as Patrick Riewer hit a solo shot in the Bears’ 8-4 win in game one. Bertha-Hewitt needed a four run seventh to break open a 4-4 tie after the Braves rallied from a 4-0 deficit.

Matt Skoog was phenomenal at the plate for the Braves during the series. The senior went 5-for-7 with three doubles and four RBIs.
