All four teams return to defend their 2011 titles: Maranatha Christian Academy of Brooklyn Park in Class A, Braham in Class AA, DeLaSalle of Minneapolis in Class AAA, and Hopkins in Class AAAA.

Arei Stokes (00) led all scorers with 31 points as Bertha-Hewitt held off a late Wadena-Deer Creek rally on Tuesday night. The junior also grabbed 16 rebounds in the Bears 59-58 victory.

Bertha, Minn.—Alicia Boe netted a game-high 22 points and dished out 11 assists as Sebeka toppled Bertha-Hewitt 69-31 during Tuesday’s Park Region Conference game.

The Lady Trojans raced to a 25-point lead at halftime (45-20) and outscored the Bears 24-11 in the second half to pick up their first conference victory of the season.

As expected, both Barnum and Upsala received the top seeds when the Section 5A girls basketball bracket was announced this morning.

Barnum (22-3), ranked No. 2 in the latest girls basketball polls, was the top seed in the East Sub-section while Upsala (22-0), ranked fifth, took the top spot in the West Sub-section. Both teams received byes and will await the winners of the pigtail games on Thursday, March 3.

Upsala will face the winner between No. 8 Menahga and No. 9 Verndale, who are scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Monday in Menahga.

Caitlin Volkmann was the only Wadena-Deer Creek player to register double digits as the Lady Wolverines picked up their fourth consecutive victory with the 55-42 non-conference win over Bertha-Hewitt on Tuesday.

Volkmann gunned 13 points and added five steals for Wadena-Deer Creek, who received balanced scoring across the scoresheet to improve to 18-4.

Sebeka finished the conference season undefeated to earn their second straight Park Region conference title and fourth in the last five years with Friday night’s 70-44 victory over Bertha-Hewitt.

The Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Series will feature a four-team, doubleheader format this weekend at Macalester College. Friday games start at 6 p.m. The Saturday matinee begins at 1:30 p.m.

Area players playing this weekend include Sari Noga of Parkers Prairie and Jessica Finck of Bertha-Hewitt.

Sebeka pulled a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde performance en route to upsetting top-seeded Bertha-Hewitt 63-55 in the West Subsection 5A title game Tuesday in Wadena.

Bertha-Hewitt was pretty much in control of the game in the first half, until the second-seeded Lady Trojans made a run just before halftime to trim the Lady Bears’ lead down to six, 36-30.

Jessica Lillquist accounted for half of the Lady Trojans’ first-half points. The sophomore tallied 16 points while senior Betsy Olson was limited to just eight points in the span.
