The Eagles of New Life Academy of Woodbury in Class A and the Pirates of Park Center, Brooklyn Park, in Class AA return to defend their respective titles. A new champion will emerge in Class AAA because Burnsville, which won in 2010, failed to qualify for this year’s tournament.

Bertha-Hewitt capitalized on nine Verndale errors in the first game and hammered out 10 hits in the second to capture the Park Region Conference sweep over the Lady Pirates on Tuesday.

The Bears erased a 2-0 deficit with two runs in the fifth and scored three runs in the top of the seventh behind a slew of Lady Pirate miscues to escape with the 5-4 victory in the first game.

Amelia Pho belted a grand slam to help Menahga savage a Park Region Conference doubleheader split with Bertha-Hewitt on Tuesday.

The senior slugger activated the 10-run rule as the Lady Braves scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth to earn the 12-1 game two victory. Pho finished with five RBIs in the game and Tarah Cleveland went 2-3 with four RBIs to lead the Lady Braves at the plate.

Menahga saved their best effort against Bertha-Hewitt in a game that really counted, as the Lady Braves stunned the Lady Bears 6-1 Tuesday to advance to the Section 6A championship game.

The South Subsection champion Lady Bears, who had defeated Menahga in a Park Region Conference doubleheader in the regular season by scores of 4-2 and 18-4, were undone by a five-run third inning outburst by the Lady Braves.

Bertha-Hewitt scored the insurance run on a wild pitch uncorked by Lady Pirate starter Jenny Swenson in the bottom of the fifth inning to escape with the 4-3 quarterfinal victory in the South Subsection 6A playoffs on Tuesday.

Swenson, who pitched six innings, suffered the loss despite limiting the top-seeded Lady Bears to five hits. The junior also had a good performance at the plate to help the eighth-seeded Lady Pirates pull out the near upset. She went 1-for-3 with a double, a run and drove in another as Verndale out hit Bertha-Hewitt in the loss.

Micaela Lausten hit a two-run shot in the sixth in the first game but the New York Mills Lady Eagles were swept by Bertha-Hewitt in the Park Region Conference doubleheader Thursday.

Lausten’s lone hit capped the Lady Eagles scoring in the opening game.

RaeAnna Salo tallied New York Mills’ first run in the third inning with a RBI single that scored Autumn Roberts for the short-lived 1-0 lead.

Bertha-Hewitt tied the game up in the fourth and then exploded for five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cruise to the 11-3 victory.

Jessica Finck was a one-lady wrecking ball as the host Bertha-Hewitt Lady Bears swept the Park Region Conference doubleheader from Menahga on Tuesday.

The senior hit a pair of home runs to go with a double in the 18-4 Bertha-Hewitt game two victory. The Lady Bears scattered 13 hits and also got doubles from Kristy Shaw and Paige Borst.

Game One
After the Lady Bears took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the opening stanza, Menahga’s Patty Haataja hit a double to score Emily Skoog and Jada Melton in the third to knot game at two apiece.

The Wadena-Deer Creek girls softball team enjoyed a pleasant spring to open the season much earlier than they have in the past.

“March 30,” Lady Wolverine coach Craig Klawitter noted. “Earliest start day in memory. [It was] mild but windy.”

The game was anything but mild, as both teams swap runs early before the Lady Wolverines seemly took control with a three-run, sixth inning outburst to break open a tied game, 6-3.
