College Baseball: Bemidji State sweeps Mavericks in Wednesday twinbill

The Minnesota State baseball team fell twice in nonconference twin bill Wednesday in the Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis.

The Mavericks dropped a 4-3 decision in the first game and then fell by a 5-1 margin in the night cap.

Junior shortstop Zach Rowles was three-for-three with a double, run scored and drove in a run to pace the Mavericks offensively in the first game. Senior righthander Pat Lenton went the distance for the Mavericks and took the loss. Lenton, who now stands 2-1 for the year, tossed six innings and gave up five hits and four earned runs while striking out nine and walking none. The Mavericks led 1-0 after two-and-a-half innings, before BSU scored twice in the bottom of the inning. MSU it with one in the top of the fifth, but the Beavers scored twice in the bottom of the fifth in making it 4-2. MSU closed out the scoring with a single run in the top of the sixth.

The Maverick bats fell silent in the second game with the Beavers outhitting MSU by a 7-4 margin en route to the 5-1 victory. MSU's lone run came in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore desiginated hitter Patrick Dockendorf hit his second home run of the year. Junior Bret Mitchell, who went the first four innings and gave up three earned runs whil striking out seven and walking two, took the loss.

The Mavericks (6-3) are scheduled to play Slippery Rock (Pa.) in Florida Sunday in the first game of nine games during spring break.
