High School Track and Field: Area teams participate in Little Amik I Meet on Tuesday

Area high school track and field teams hit the ground running Tuesday when they participated in the17-team Little Amik I Track and Field Meet held at Bemidji State University.

Wadena-Deer Creek came in fifth-place in the girls standings with 53 points. Rachel Craig did well for the Lady Wolverines as she scored two second-place finishes in the shot put and discus throw for the field events. The junior also placed fourth in the 55 meter hurdles. Charley Cantrell had a runner-up finish in the 400 meter dash and third in the 800 meter run. Hannah Toedter was fourth in the 1600 meter run and fifth in the 800 meter run.

Dane Hoffman paced the Wolverine boys team with a winning discus throw of 124’10”. The senior also finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 42’8.5”. Jordan Jacobson also placed in the discus, finishing fourth.

Both Alicia Boe and Tom Gruchow were the highest finishers for the United North Central Warriors. Boe crossed the finish line first in the girls 1600 meter run with a time of 5:43.56 while Gruchow won the boys 400 meter dash with a blazing time of 54.25.

For the Lady Eagles of New York Mills, Brittnie Menze hurled the shot put 35’7” for first-place while Erik Tumberg led the Eagles’ boys team with three top-10 finishes. The junior placed fourth in the triple jump, sixth in the long jump and seventh in the high jump. Ben Jacobson placed fourth in the 55 meter hurdles.

“Both teams had many personal bests and we did really well,” said Angie Turner, the Eagles’ first-year head coach. “Many times and distances were an improvement from last season.”

Turner was especially pleased with the performance of both the junior high and new track members. She is looking forward to see them perform in the junior high track meet on Tuesday.

“Individually, each athlete did a great job in their events,” Turner said. “Way to go, it will only get better. Keep working hard!”
