Mens College Basketball: Huskies score season high in 107-71 win at Bemidji State

St. Cloud State completed a weekend road sweep in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) men’s basketball action Saturday night with a 107-71 win over Bemidji State University. The 107 points is the most scored by the Huskies this season.
St. Cloud State improved to 18-4 overall and 12-3 in the NSIC to keep a hold on second place in the league. The Huskies have won five straight. Bemidji State dropped to 7-14 overall and 4-11 in the NSIC.
Five players scored in double figures for the Huskies. Senior center Matt Schneck (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) scored a game high 19 points to lead St. Cloud State. He also had six rebounds. Junior guard Taylor Witt (Morris) scored 16 points and handed out six assists. Junior Andrews Bernstetter (St. Joseph) knocked down 13 points and had seven rebounds. First year center Tim Bergstraser (St. Cloud) scored 12 points and nine rebounds, both career highs. Sophomore guard Theo Rothstein (St. Michael) added ten points.
The Huskies shot 53.6 percent from the field and started both halves with a hot shooting hand as they connected on six of eight shooting from the field. St. Cloud State shot an impressive 60.6 percent in the second half alone. St. Cloud State held the advantage on the boards 39-28 and only committed nine turnovers. The Huskies scored 48 points in the paint, had six dunks, and the bench produced 47 points.
St. Cloud State led 50-36 at the half after jumping out to a 12-2 start. Midway through the first half, the Huskies claimed a 17 point lead, 31-14 on two Schneck free throws. Over the next six minutes Bemidji State chipped away at the Husky lead drawing to within seven points, 39-32 at the 4:29 mark. A Bergstraser layup and a three-point basket from Brett Putz put the Huskies up 12 at 3:13, and the lead increased to 14 at halftime.
Two minutes into the second half, the Husky lead increased to 20 points as Schneck and Rothstein combined to score the first eight points of the second frame.
Bemidji State was led in scoring by Seth Haake with 17 points and seven rebounds. The Beavers shot 42.3 percent from the field.
The Huskies play host to Southwest Minnesota State next Friday, and will meet the league leader Minnesota State University, Mankato on Saturday.
