Mens College Hockey: Huskies skate to 3-2 win at Minnesota State

Mankato, Minn. - The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (5-5-2, 3-2-1 WCHA)returned to the win column on Saturday, Nov. 12 with a hard-fought 3-2 victory at Minnesota State University (3-7-0, 2-4-0 WCHA) in Mankato, Minn.

The Huskies gained a quick lead in the contest as sophomore forward Cory Thorson (Crystal) scored at 1:19 of the first period. Assists on the play were provided by freshman defender Jarrod Rabey (Rockton, Ill.) and sophomore forward Mitch MacMillan (Penticton, B.C.). This was Thorson second goal of the weekend and his third of the season.

SCSU junior forward Ben Hanowski (Little Falls) had just hit the ice after Thorson's goal when he lit the lamp at 1:48 of the first period. The solo assist on the goal by Hanowski was added by freshman defender Andrew Prochno (Shorewood). This was Hanowski's 7th goal of the season. Prochno now has 3g/3a this season as a rookie for the Huskies.

MSU broke the shutout at 6:55 of the first with a goal by Eriah Hayes. Assists on the play were notched by Eli Zuck and Michael Dorr.

The Huskies regained control of the offense at 9:07 of the first period when junior David Eddy (Woodbury) scored his third goal of the year. He scored on a tipped shot of teammate sophomore defender Kevin Gravel (Kingsford, Mich.). The second assist was credited to Hanowski. Of note, Gravel also had an assist on Thorson's goal scored on Nov. 11.

After a scoreless second period, MSU got back on the scoresheet with a shorthanded goal by Adam Mueller. Michael Dorr had the solo assist that made the score 3-2 at 6:30 of the third.

MSU made a strong push down the stretch but SCSU netmider Ryan Faragher (Fort Frances, Ont.) and the Husky defense was able to withstand the threat. In the closing minute of play, MSU pulled its goalie but the Huskies held on for the win.

In the game, MSU outshot the Huskies 31-19, which include a 12-3 margin by the Mavs in the third period. Faragher made 29 saves in the contest for the Huskies as Austin Lee had 16 saves for MSU in the game.

On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-3 and MSU was 1-of-3.
