Northwoods Baseball: Lunkers stymie Beetles to complete series sweep (REPOSTED)

The Alexandria Beetles were able to get a lead in the final game of the season opening series against Brainerd but couldn't hold on as the Lunkers completed the three-game sweep with a 10-3 victory.

The Lunkers got on the scoreboard early on against Beetles starter Erik Shannahan (John A Logan) with two runs in the first inning. It stayed 2-0 until the bottom of the third when Will Miller (Furman) brought in Cody Curry with an RBI single. Matt Lowenstein (Loyola Marymount) then followed with an RBI single to score Eric Birch (Waldorf). Miller moved to third on the play and scored on a sacrifice fly by cleanup batter Taylor Davis (Morehead State).

That would be the only runs the Beetles would be able to get however as three Lunker relievers held Alexandria scoreless over the last six innings of the ballgame. TJ Berge (Northern Colorado) was the story of the game offensively as he went 4-5 on the day for Brainerd. The Littleton, Colorado native also scored three runs to help pace the Lunkers offensive effort.

Shannahan was credited with the loss for the Beetles as he went four and two-thirds innings, giving up six runs and striking out only one batter. With the loss, Alexandria falls to 0-3 on the young season.

The Beetles will remain at home for the next four games and take on the Mankato Moondogs on Saturday, June 5th with the first pitch at 6:05 pm.
