Cody Pulju led all scorers with 22 points and John Clark posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds but it wasn’t enough as Class A, top-ranked Sebeka saw its 23-game win streak end at the hands of Class AA, sixth-ranked Perham 65-60 in a non-conference game Tuesday night.
“It was a great atmosphere for a game and I think the fans got their money’s worth with two teams really battling it out for 36 minutes.” Sebeka head coach Jon Lillquist said.
The standing room only crowd not only got their money’s worth, but also witnessed the Trojans lose at home for the first time since a 69-42 loss to Bertha-Hewitt back on January 22, 2008, a span of 41 games.
The two top-ranked teams battled through 12 lead changes and five ties, the last coming at the break with both teams tied at 32-32.
Perham rattled off six consecutive points to open up the second half and the Yellowjackets never trailed again. The Trojans did battled to pull within one, 49-48, on a basket from Clark, but it’ll be the closest Sebeka will get the rest of the night.
Perham ended up going 5-for-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the victory.
Sebeka ended up shooting 39 percent (20-for-51) from the floor while Perham hit 46 percent (26-for-57). The ‘Jackets forced the Trojans into 20 turnovers and held a 36-31 advantage on the boards.
"We didn't play our best game and to beat great teams you need to be at your best.” Lillquist explained. “Give Perham credit though they really took us out of many things we wanted to do on offense."
Besides Pulju and Clark, the Trojans also got 14 points from Jason Sharp. The senior gunned four three-pointers in the loss. Sebeka’s top-gunner Ryan Sharp was held to four points by the stingy ‘Jacket defense.
“I was very happy to see Jason step up and give us some huge baskets,” Lillquist added. “That gives us another weapon as we get closer to playoffs.”
Perham had two players score into the double digits, with Mark Schumacher leading the ‘Jackets with a team-high 20 points. Jordan Cresap added 16 points for Perham, who improved to 23-1.
