Marty Charest almost single-handily delivered the victory to the Class A, sixth-ranked Ottertail Central Bulldogs during Friday’s 35-6 Prairie Conference win over visiting Wadena-Deer Creek.
The senior quarterback destroyed the Wolverine defense with three touchdown runs and threw for another as the Bulldogs racked up over 300 yards of total offense in the conference win.
After a scoreless opening quarter, Charest ignited the Ottertail Central offense with a three-yard run at the start of the second quarter. The Bulldogs would score twice more to carry a 19-0 lead at the break after Charest threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Dan Marso and ran in for another score from 12-yards out.
Neither team could find the endzone in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs weren’t finished lighting up the scoreboard quite yet. Tom Lachowitzer punched in for a one-yard run at the start of the fourth quarter and Charest capped his big night with his third touchdown run from 11 yards to make it 35-0.
Logan Meyer got Wadena-Deer Creek on the board with under one minute to play on a five-yard run. The Wolverines extra-point kick was blocked.
Offensively, Wadena-Deer Creek manged to generate 125 yards of total offense against the stubborn Bulldog defense. Meyer had 57 of the Wolverines 67 total yards rushing on 15 carries and had one reception for six yards. Junior quarterback Evan VanErp completed three passes for 58 yards and was intercepted twice. Matt Laughlin had one catch for 32 yards late in the fourth quarter that set up the lone Wolverine touchdown.
On the Bulldogs’ side of the ball, Charest completed five passes for 102 yards and picked up another 73 yards rushing on 17 carries. Marso had two catches for 55 yards and a touchdown for Ottertail Central.
Jake Ludovissie had five tackles and 11 assists while Mike Paavola posted six tackles, one assist and two quarterback sacks to help lead the Wolverine defense.
