Prep Football: Section 4 9-Man Final: Warriors romp past Eagle Valley, 50-16

Wheaton/Herman-Norcross relied on its ground game and dominant defense to hand undefeated Eagle Valley its first loss of the season Friday afternoon during the 9-man, Section 4 championship game in the Fargodome.

Wolfgang Brink scored three of the Warriors four rushing touchdowns and the defense returned two long interceptions for scores enroute to the 50-16 victory.

The Rebels’ tied the game at 8-8 early in the second quarter on Tyler Oftedahl’s seven-yard pass to Tyson Eckel. However, Warrior defensive back Nick Stafford intercepted Oftedahl on the next Eagle Valley possession and raced untouched for a 68-yard touchdown to ignite the rout.

Brink put the Warriors on the board early in the opening quarter with a two-yard run and added a six-yarder just before the half to spot the Warriors the 22-8 lead. The senior finished with just 30 yards rushing on 10 carries, but scored his third touchdown of the afternoon on a seven-yard run in the third quarter.

The Warriors’ Tyler Schwagel completed four passes for 59 yards and had two touchdown passes during the victory. He also added a two-yard run early in the third quarter.

Oftedahl found reciever Tate Benning for a 47-yard scoring strike to pull the Rebels’ within 28-16 with 4:39 left in the third quarter.

But the Warriors iced the game in the fourth quarter with three touchdowns—the last being a 69-yard interception return by Patrick Conroy.

Oftedahl went 14 for 28 for 164 yards passing in the loss. Jerod Nelson was the Rebels’ top receiver with four catches for 62 yards, with Benning adding two receptions for 53 yards. The Rebels’ standout running back Jacob Schauer was held to 72 yards rushing on 18 carries.

Eagle Valley finished the season with an 10-1 record.
