Prep Football: Verndale hosts scrimmage; football opener cancelled

Verndale kicked off the football season by hosting their annual scrimmage with teams from Isle, Parkers Prairie, Eagle Valley, Bertha-Hewitt, Omania, Underwood and Hancock this morning.
The Pirates' season opener at home against Lincoln HI this Friday has been cancelled due the Rebels' low numbers out for football, and with the Ivanhoe school district breaking off with Hendricks, the ability for Lincoln HI to field a football team had been in question.
But on Wednesday, August 24, the MSHSL formally approved a cooperative plan that would allow Lincoln Hi players to join the Minneota football team this season.

Verndale head coach and athletic director Mike Mahlen has picked up a game with Hancock to make up for the cancelled football opener with a bit of creative re-arranging of the Pirates' schedule. Verndale will host the Owls on Tuesday, October 4th and the scheduled game at Parkers Prairie has been moved to Saturday, October 8th. Both games will start at 7 p.m.
The Pirates will now open the 2011 season a week later than originally scheduled on September 9th when they travel to Echo, Minnesota to take on the E.C.H.O Charter School Rockets at 7 p.m.
