Prep Football: Verndale squeaks past rival Bertha-Hewitt, 14-8

Andy Bounds scored on a 18-yard run with 2:22 left in the game and Colton Moyer’s late interception gave Verndale its second win of the season in Friday’s 14-8 Pheasant Conference victory over rival Bertha-Hewitt.

The Pirates struck first on a nine-yard pass from Dillon Card to Kory Stave and Dallas Ehrmantraut snagged the conversion pass for the 8-0 lead at 6:00 of the first quarter.

Verndale’s lead would stand until the third quarter when the Bears opened the second half with a nine-yard touchdown run from Matthew Fretham. The senior would also tack on the conversion run to tie the game at 8-8 with 7:39 left in the third quarter.

Bounds collected 146 yards rushing on 33 carries as Verndale racked up 168 yards rushing in the victory.

Both teams finished with 260 yards of total offense.

Card completed seven passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. Ehrmantraut caught four passes for 64 yards and also notched a team-high 16 tackles on defense. Moyer rushed for 30 yards on two carries and posted nine tackles with a interception. Alex Walsvik added 12 tackles for the Pirates.

Fretham led the Bears with 162 yards rushing on 36 carries in the loss.

Verndale (2-2) will host Hancock at 7 p.m. Tuesday
