Prep Football: Wolverines claw past Pirates, 20-12
Mitchell Andrews—who had 106 yards rushing on 20 attempts—rumbled for two touchdowns to help Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley escape the Verndale Pirates 20-12 in a Pheasant Conference game Friday night.
Andrews gave the Wolverines the 6-0 lead with a 20-yard scamper in the first quarter and scored the only touchdown of the second half with a one-yard run.
After Pirate quarterback Nathan Bart found wide receiver Kyle Booth for a 24-yard TD pass to tie the game up at the start of the second quarter, Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley responded with a 25-yard TD run from Chalmer Combellick. The conversion run from Kasey Karsky gave the Wolverines an eight-point lead, 14-6.
The Pirates quickly answered when Jacob Perius returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, but the Pirates’ conversion pass fell incomplete, allowing the Wolverines to carry the 14-12 lead into halftime.
Verndale finished with 117 total yards on offense. Cody Yungbauer rushed for 62 yards on 18 carries and also caught one pass for 43 yards. Bart completed two passes for 67 yards in the game.
Defensively, the Pirates were led by Dan Kneisl, who notched a team-high 22 tackles and sacked the quarterback once in the loss. Yungbauer added 14 tackles with Tim Kern and Colton Moyer each collecting 13.
Verndale (1-6) hosts Lincoln HI at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
