Isle, Minn.—In a game that literally went down to the buzzer between two of the top teams in Section 5A, Katianne Brockpahler dribbled the length of the court and hit a jumper at the buzzer to lift Sebeka past Isle 58-57 on Saturday.
“Our first buzzer beater in a long time,” Sebeka head coach Mike Heino said. “It was a great back and forth game from the beginning.”
The Lady Trojans needed a 17-7 run late in the first half to carry a 33-30 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Huskies led most of the second half and had a seven-point cushion with 2:30 left to play.
Sebeka then turned up the defensive pressure to battle back and tied the game. The Lady Trojans went eight for eight from the charity stripe down the stretch and tied it at 56-56 behind a pair of free-throws from Brockpahler with 20 seconds left.
On their next possession, Isle raced down the floor and Sebeka’s Jasmine Titcomb apparently took a charge—but the referee didn’t agree. Lindsey Lahr made one of two free-throws to put the Huskies back up front 57-56 with seven seconds remaining.
That set the stage for Brockpahler’s heroics as the junior grabbed the inbounds pass, dribbled coast to coast, pulled up in front of the free-throw line and hit the game-winner as the buzzer went off.
“Katianne and the team really had a great effort down the stretch,” Heino added.
Sebeka shot 34 percent (19 for 56) from the floor, but manage to offset the cold shooting by hitting 63 percent (20 of 32) of their freebies. Alicia Boe led the Lady Trojans from the charity stripe, going 13 for 14 at the line to finish with a game-high 19 points. The senior also posted 12 boards and dished out five assists for Sebeka, who improved to 4-1.
Jessica Lillquist posted a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Brockpahler missed becoming the third Lady Trojan with a double-double when she added 12 points and nine rebounds. Brett Brockpahler posted nine points and eight boards.
Isle countered with 18 points apiece from Lahr and Maja Coomes in the loss.
