Prep Girls Basketball: Wadena-Deer Creek swats Perham 65-50

Wadena, Minn.—Caitlin Volkmann nailed five three-pointers en route to a team-high 23 points as Wadena-Deer Creek swatted the visiting Perham Yellowjackets 65-50 in Thursday’s non-conference girls basketball action.

“Caitlin shot very well for us,” Wadena-Deer Creek head coach Keith Ferris said. “I was glad to see our team respond after Tuesday’s loss against Staples-Motley—very pleased with how we played tonight.”

Perham countered with a game-high 25 points from Katrina Moenkedick, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Yellowjackets from falling to 0-3 on the season.

Avery Jackson added 19 points as Wadena-Deer Creek shot 51 percent (26 for 51) from the field and led by 11-points at halftime, 32-21.

Emily Miron registered eight points and had team-highs in rebounds (6) and blocks (6) as the Lady Wolverines improved to 4-1. Courtney Dumpprope also had eight points in the victory, with Hope Theisen adding seven points and four assists.

The ‘Jackets’ Becky Stoll netted 12 points and Lexy Karvonen added nine. Perham out-rebounded the Lady Wolverines 31-27 with Moenkedick posting a team-high seven in the loss.

Wadena-Deer Creek outscored the ‘Jackets 33-29 in the second half and were aided by 21 turnovers. Volkmann had four steals.

Wadena-Deer Creek will travel to Detroit Lakes at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday for a Mid-State Conference matchup with the Lakers.
