Baudette, Minn.—Lake of the Woods had a reason to celebrate Hockey Day Minnesota on Saturday after Kelsey Jonassen netted the game-winning goal late in the third period.
It was the Lady Bears’ first win since February 2010.
Jonassen scored with four minutes left to play, and Lake of the Woods held on for the 3-2 victory over visiting Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek.
April Beckel’s squad ignited the hometown crowd during the annual state-wide hockey festivities when Jaylene Anderson scored the game’s first goal at the 6:42 mark to put the Lady Bears up front 1-0.
The Blue Devils cashed in on one of the Lady Bears’ five penalties in the game with a power-play goal four minutes later. Sam Killian scored the tying goal with Halley Maas and Kylee Helling providing the helpers on the play.
After a scoreless second period, the Lady Bears turned up the heat by peppering Blue Devil goalie Sarah Holm with 27 shots in the stanza.
However, it was the Blue Devils that took the 2-1 lead when Brooke Umland unleashed a slapshot from under the blue line that tickled the back of the net.
The lead won’t last long as Anderson scored her second goal of the afternoon to tie the game, and set the stage for Jonassen’s heroics three minutes later.
The Lady Bears ended up throwing 51 shots at Holm, while the Blue Devils had 16 at Lake of the Woods’ netminder Emily Ney.
Jonassen’s game-winning goal snapped a 49-game winless streak by the Lady Bears. The last victory by Lake of the Woods was back in February 6th, 2010 when they defeated Beaver Brae (Manitoba) 4-3. The Lady Bears were 0-15 this season entering the Saturday’s contest with the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils (5-14) look to end their current two-game skid against Mid-State rival Park Rapids Area at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Wadena.
