Prep Girls Tennis: Lady Wolverines drop both triangular matches in Staples

The Wadena-Deer Creek girls tennis team dropped a pair of matches in Thursday’s triangular in Staples-Motley. The Lady Wolverines were defeated by the host Cardinals 6-1 in the opener and then fell 5-2 to Crosby-Ironton.

The lone Wadena-Deer Creek win in the Staples-Motley match came courtesy of the Lady Wolverines’ No. 3 doubles team of Erin Johnson and Elise Kallevig. The duo scored a third-set tiebreaker victory over the Cardinals’ Megan Han and Jessica Johnson by scores of 4-6, 6-4 (10-6).

Macy Hartman made her first appearance in the Lady Wolverines line-up after recovering from an knee injury that occurred last spring. The junior lost the third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles to the Cardinals’ Emily Israelson 5-7, 6-1 (3-7).

Wadena-Deer Creek had four matches go into extra sets in the 5-2 loss to the Rangers. Sarah Najjar picked up her first win of the season at No. 3 singles with the hard-fought, 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, (7-5) victory over the Rangers’ Margaret Stockman. The Lady Wolverines’ third doubles team of Erin Johnson and Desiree Isola scored a 6-4, 4-6 (7-3) tiebreaker win over Megan Meyer and Kiki Bender.

The Hartman sisters (Paige and Macy) dropped both of their matches via tiebreakers. Paige was topped by Crosby-Ironton’s Mariah Hudrlik 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), (2-7) at No. 1 singles while Macy fell to the Rangers Gabrelle Hudrlik 6-1, 4-6, (5-7) at No. 2 singles.

Wadena-Deer Creek (0-9) travels to Park Rapids to participate in the Mid-State Conference meet at 9 a.m. Saturday
