Prep Girls Tennis: New York Mills wraps up busy week at home with West Central Area

The New York Mills girls tennis team wrapped up a busy opening week at home against West Central Area in a Prairie Conference dual meet on Friday.
But first, the young Lady Eagles participated in the Osakis Qaudrangular during the season opener on August 22, winning just one match.
New York Mills was forced to forfeit the third doubles matches, but it it didn’t stop them from being competitive on the courts despite being shorthanded.
“We had a very busy week of tennis and played competively in each event. We are a bit younger and less experienced this season and right now we are a couple of players short of a full line up.” Lady Eagle head coach Gary Bach said. “However, the team is enthusiastic and determined to improve their skills and give their best effort every match.”
Vicky Selander posted the Lady Eagles’ lone win in the quadrangular with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Morris Area’s Kjersa Anderson at No. 3 singles during the opener, which was won by the Tigers by a score of 6-1.
Melrose and Osakis scored 7-0 victories over New York Mills to wrap up the event, although the Lady Eagles’ doubles team of Jenna Esala and Krista Guldseth nearly scored a victory over the Dutchmen. The duo dropped a super-tiebreaker to Melrose’s Michaela Worms and Emily Hellermann at No. 1 doubles by a score of 6-4, 4-6 (8-10).
Next up for New York Mills was the Highway 10 Tournament co-hosted by Staples-Motley and Wadena-Deer Creek on Wednesday, August 24. Two players place high for the Lady Eagles, who finished eighth in the eight-team tournament with eight points.
Selander was the highest Lady Eagle placer with a runner-up finish at No. 3 singles. The sophomore topped Sartell/St. Stephen’s Brooke Radi 3-6, 7-5 (10-3) in their singles opener on the Wadena-Deer Creek courts. She dispatched Abby Wegscheid of Wadena-Deer Creek 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals but fell to Alexa Hoffarth of Osakis in the championship match by a score of 3-6, 0-6.
New York Mills’ Jenna Esala also opened the tournament with a victory. The senior won her No. 1 singles opener 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 over Elese Sjogren of Sartell/St. Stephen, but dropped her next two matches to finished fourth.
Abby Salo defeated Mackayla Olsen of Stewartville 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) to finish in 7th place at No. 4 singles to round out the Lady Eagles team scoring.

Three of the four singles matches went extra sets as the Lady Eagles nearly picked up their first win of the season during Friday’s 5-2 Prairie Conference loss to West Central Area.
Esala dispatched the Knights Jasmyn Sutton in two sets at No. 1 singles, while Abby Salo picked up a 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 victory over the Knights’ Vessa Bumgardner at fourth singles. Lady Eagles’ No. 2 singles player Krista Guldseth won her first set, but fell in the next two sets.
