Prep Softball: Lady Pirates come up short against Pillager, 7-5

Kirsten Korfe had a double and four RBIs and Lizzy Yungbauer doubled twice and drove in a run, but Verndale still came up short against Pillager during the 7-5 Park Region Conference loss to the Huskies on Tuesday.

Both teams traded the equal number of runs in the third and fourth innings until the Huskies broke the 5-all tie with a pair of unanswered runs in the top of the seventh.

Kaylie Hanson’s two-run double gave Pillager the 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but the Lady Pirates answered with Korfe’s two-run single. The Huskies scored three runs in the fourth and Verndale responded once again with back-to-back doubles from Kofe (2RBI) and Yungbauer (RBI).

The score remain deadlocked until the seventh when an error by the Lady Pirates pushed the game-winner across. Ally Hunstad added the insurance run with an RBI single to cap the scoring for the Huskies.

Hunstad pitched all seven innings for the Huskies to pick up the win. She struck out nine, walked two and gave up three earned runs. The senior also helped her cause at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.

Danielle Johnson was 2-for-3 with a run and RBI while Hannah Horn went 2-for-3 with a run and Hanson finished 1-for-4 with a run, double and 2RBIs for the Huskies.

Verndale (2-17 overall, 1-13 conference) wraps up the regular season at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Nevis.
