Prep Softball: Lady Pirates unplug Chargers to snap 11-game slide

Jenny Swenson pitched a complete game and Mara Kern drove in three runs as the Verndale Lady Pirates snapped a 11-game losing streak with the 6-2 non-conference win over Brandon/Evansville on Thursday.

The Lady Pirates scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break up a 2-2 game. Lizzy Yungbauer led off the frame with a single, and back-to-back walks to Jordy Schluttner and Jenny Swenson loaded the bases. Sydney Weniger reached on a fielders choice as Yungbauer was forced out at home.

Kern hit a line drive that was misplayed by the Chargers’ right fielder, scoring three runs in the process. Another Charger error on a Jackie Swenson hit plated Kern for the final run of the game.

Jenny Swenson allowed three hits, two runs (one earned) and struck out five for the Lady Pirates second win of the season.

Teresa Moenkedick and Elizabeth Johnson went 2-for-4 at the plate for Verndale.

Verndale (2-12) hosts Sebeka in a Park Region Conference doubleheader at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
