Prep Softball: Lady Wolverines swat Perham in conference doubleheader
Leah Dykhoff put up some devastating numbers at the plate for Wadena-Deer Creek as they closed out the regular season with a 5-3 and 11-0 Mid-Conference sweep of Perham on Friday.
The senior went 4-for-8 with a triple and scored four runs before leaving with an injury in the fourth inning of the Lady Wolverines win in the nightcap.
Jessica Wegscheid went 2-for-3 with a run and Sam Holweger was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the opener. The Lady Wolverines used a four-run fifth to offset Perham’s three-run rally in the sixth.
Steph Hahn surrendered three runs on six hits and struck out four to record the complete game victory. In the second game, the senior went 2-for-3 with a run in the before she too, also suffering a injury in the fourth inning.
Wadena-Deer Creek cruised to a five inning victory in the nightcap by jumping on Yellowjacket starter Kristina Janusczewski. The Lady Wolverines tallied five runs in the opening frame and then added three runs in the second.
Kelly DeFoe pitched all five innings of the one-hitter to record the game two win.
It was the second consecutive brilliant performance on the mound for the senior, who took a no-hitter into the seventh in her last start.
Megan Popp went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs as the Lady Wolverines scattered nine hits in the shutout victory.
Wadena-Deer Creek (13-6) will host a first-round game of the Section 8AA playoffs in Wadena Tuesday. The opponent and times should be announced Monday morning.

Editors Note: I ran into both injured Lady Wolverine softball players while covering the Wolverines baseball game against Bertha-Hewitt at the Wadena County Stadium on Friday night.
The first thought I had after seeing Miss Dykhoff holding a big bag of ice to her left eye and Miss Hahn on crunches was, ‘Jeez, did I miss a bench-clearing brawl or something?’
Rest assured folks, I was just joking. It turned out to be just pair of freak injuries.
Dykhoff got hit in the eye with the ball by a teammate during warm ups at the end of the forth inning. She will be fine, but will sport a nice shiner for awhile.
Hahn, on the other hand, will be out for the rest of the year. She told me that she badly hyper-extended her right knee running into a base.
