Prep Softball: Lady Wolverines take two from Pequot Lakes
After being held to four hits against Detroit Lakes on Tuesday, Wadena-Deer Creek unleashed 19 hits to upend the visiting Pequot Lakes Patriots in both games of the Mid-State Conference doubleheader Thursday.
Sam Holweger combined to go 4-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Lady Wolverines, who needed a four-run third inning to win the opener 7-5 before breezing to a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.
Megan Popp and Leah Dykhoff contributed two hits and drove in a pair of runs in the game one win. Holweger had two hits and drove in a run with Popp collecting a double in that game.
Amanda Perkins spotted the Patriots the early 3-0 lead in the first inning but settled down to claim the win despite pitching three innings. She gave up four hits and struck out one.
The Lady Wolverines tallied three runs apiece in the second and third innings to account for all the runs they needed to secure the doubleheader sweep in the nightcap.
Holweger and Perkins belted out two hits apiece as the Lady Wolverines roughed up Patriot starter Lindzee Johnson for 10 hits in the contest. Lexie Hoemberg added a double, run scored and drove in a run.
Despite five errors committed by the defense, Steph Hahn pitched a three-hit, complete game for Wadena-Deer Creek for the win.
Megan Hogan scored Patriots lone run in the first inning and finished 2-for-4 at the plate.
Wadena-Deer Creek (11-6) wraps up the regular season against Perham at 4 p.m. Friday (today) at the softball complex in Wadena.
