Hawley used a two-run sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and beat Sebeka 4-1 in non-conference softball action on Thursday.
Hawley, playing in their opener in Sebeka, would draw first blood in the top of the third inning. The Nuggets’ Jody Noreen led off the inning with a single off Lady Trojan starter Brett Brockpahler. Noreen stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.
Sebeka would not go away quietly though. After leaving five baserunners stranded in the first four innings, the Lady Trojans would finally get one across in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Katianne Brockpahler would draw a walk and steal second base. After a flyout to center, Jessica Lillquist would come to the plate and hit a single to centerfield to score Brockpahler.
Hawley would waste no time in taking the lead back in the top of the sixth. A lead off walk would get the rally started for the Nuggets. The next batter would hit a line drive to right and it would make it all the way to the fence to score the run and get the batter to third. That run would score on a ground out to to infield to make it 3-1.
Hawley would get an insurance run in the top of the seventh with a walk, stolen base and a single.
Sebeka couldn’t get the tying run to home plate after a Brockpahler single but a line drive to center would end the game.
"That was the story of the game for us. We hit some hard line drives but they were either at people or Hawley would make an amazing diving catch. We had four hits and they had five. With a little luck we would've had eight or nine and then it's a whole different game.” Sebeka coach Jon Lillquist explained. “We need to find ways to manufacture runs and at the same time limit our opponents runs when they have just a few hits.”
Brett Brockpahler picked up the loss going the full seven innings. She gave up five hits, four runs (three earned), walked four and struck out seven batters. Jessy Noreen picked up the win for the Nuggets, going the complete game with four hits, one run, three walks and six strikeouts.
Katianne Brockpahler led Sebeka's offense with two hits, one walk, one stolen base and a run scored.
“Offensively we did a great job putting the ball in play against a dominant pitcher, so we do have some positives we can take from this game.", Lillquist stated.
