Prep Softball: Menahga blanks Lady Pirates in conference action, 13-0

Lindsey White gave up three hits in five innings and struck out seven as Menahga shut out the Verndale Lady Pirates 13-0 during Park Region Conference softball action Thursday.

The Lady Braves capitalized on three Verndale errors and four walks to rack up eight runs in the opening frame. Haley Hotakainen laced a bases-clearing double and Joy Haataja added a two-run single as Menahga only came up with three hits during the frame.

After adding another run in the second inning, the Lady Braves scored four more in the fourth to activate the 10-run rule. Haataja and Tarah Cleveland led off the inning with back-to-back singles, which was followed by Amelia Pho’s second double of the game that drove in Haataja. Jada Melton drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to plate Cleveland and Maria Tormanen capped the Lady Braves’ scoring with a two-run single.

Menahga scattered eight hits in the game as Pho (three runs, two doubles and two RBIs) and Haataja (two runs and two RBIs) each registered two hits. Hotakainen (run and three RBIs) had a double.

Teresa Moenkedick had two of the Lady Pirates three hits in the loss.

Menahga (11-4 overall, 11-2 conference) hosts a tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday. Verndale (2-15 overall, 1-12 conference) hosts Pine River-Backus at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
