Prep State Wrestling: Area wrestlers still alive at state tournament

12 wrestlers in the Beyond the Bleachers coverage area are still alive in the State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul as of Friday night.
In Class A, all three Wadena-Deer Creek wrestlers were eliminated in the wrestlebacks. Jared Wegscheid (140) lost a 12-6 decision, Tony Reurink (215) was beaten 4-3 after three overtimes and Dylan Anderson (HWT) was pinned. Ruerink went 1-2 in the tournament after winning his opening round match with a 7-3 decision over Andrew Plumski of Royalton/Upsala. The sophomore was pinned by Crookston’s Brody Davidson in the quarterfinals to fall into the wrestlebacks.
Colin Turchin (HWT) of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale pinned his way to the championship semifinals. The junior stuck Peyten Crosby of Martin County West in 30 seconds in the opening round and topped that time with a 15 second fall over Aaron Buihler of LeSueur-Henderson in the quarterfinals. Tuchin will go up against Travis Longhenry of Canby in the semifinals.
New York Mills’ Shane Novak (112) won both of his opening-day matches to reach the championship semifinals. Novak defeated Mick Roemer of Wasbasha-Kellogg/Alma 7-5 in the first round and then edged United South Central’s Dylan Herman 1-0 in the quarterfinals. The sophomore will go up against Quinten Berres of Kimball Area. The other two Eagle wrestlers were knocked out as Noah Pesola (171) was defeated in the wrestlebacks, and Seth Hofland (152) was eliminated when the wrestler who beat him lost his next match.
United North Central’s lone representative Jake Malone (125) was knocked out in the wrestlebacks. The sophomore lost a 3-2 decision to Gus McCarthy of Border West in the opening round, and was defeated 5-1 in the wrestlebacks by Marcus Hamer of Kimball Area.
Park Rapids Area’s Danny Pike (171) is the only Panther that remains in contention with his pin in the wrestlebacks. Brandon Ritter (HWT) was eliminated when his first round opponent lost his next match.
Parkers Prairie’s Kevin Hahn (171) was eliminated when the wrestler that beat him in the opening round lost his next match.
Frazee has five of their 11 individual qualifiers still alive in the tournament. Tanner Ellenberg (125), Bruce Lemon (130), and Kody Lafraniere-Sorenson (189) were the only three Hornets to reach the championship semifinals. Trevor Stilke (112), after being pinned in the championship quarterfinals, bounced back to score a close 1-0 decision in the wrestlebacks. Rij Koehnen (140) bounced back to win a 4-0 decision in the wrestlebacks.
Isaac Schermerhorn (103), Jordan Koehler (119), Cody Piper (152) and Rick Brandt (215) were eliminated when their first round opponent lost in the championship quarterfinals. Myrel Schermerhorn (135) and Casey Nunn (145) both were knocked out when they lost their wrestleback matches.
All five Ottertail Central wrestlers were knocked from the tournament. Zach Johnson (119) and Zach Matthys (130) both fell in the wrestlebacks. Greg Blum (125), Tyler Olson (145) and Brendan Hart (152) were denied a second match when their first round opponents lost their next match.
In Class AA, Blake Petrich is the only wrestler from Staples-Motley that remains alive in the tournament. The junior registered two pins to reach the championship semifinals. Brent Lisson (152) was eliminated when his opening round opponent lost in the championship quarterfinals and Chandler Trout (189) lost a 10-6 decision in the wrestlebacks.
Cody Nylander (215) and Jesse Hein (285) are the only two wrestlers for Perham still alive. Both bounced back to win their wrestleback matches. Luke Sailer (125) was eliminated in the wrestlebacks and Brandon Lueders (119) was knocked out when the wrestler who beat him in the opening round lost his next match.
Fergus Falls’ Abbot Aho (112) pinned Eric Bourgeois of Monticello at 3:33 to reach the championship semifinals. The other three Otter wrestlers were eliminated in the wrestlebacks. Derek Teberg (140) was pinned, Matt Laugen (145) lost a 6-4 decision and Bryant Marquedant (160) was beaten 3-1 in overtime.
Little Falls’ lone representative Dillon Kifer (135) pinned his opponent at 1:52 in the wrestlebacks to stay alive. The junior will face Eric Nelson of Stewartville in the next round.
In Class AAA, all three Alexandria wrestlers were knocked out of the tournament. Andy Bouressa (189) lost a 7-4 decision and Dillon Schuaff (215) was beaten 6-1 in the wrestlebacks. Cole Ellison (160) was eliminated when his first round opponent lost his next match.
