Prep Track & Field: Area teams participate in Browne Invitational Thursday

Five local high school track and field teams in the Beyond the Bleachers coverage area participated in the Browne Invitational held at Wadena-Deer Creek on Thursday.

Staples-Motley was the top team with runner-up finishes in the boys’ and girls’ team standings.

Brian Huber led the Cardinal boys with three first place finishes. The freshman speedster won the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash and high jump events while teammates Jason Johnson won the discus throw, Brandon Larson the triple jump and Brandon Sterriker the pole vault.

The Cardinal girls team had nine runner-up finishes with Jaelin Beachy placing in both hurdle events. The Cardinal girls relay teams finished first in the 4x800 and second in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 events.

Wadena-Deer Creek finished fifth (54 points) in the girls standings and was led by Rachel Craig with first place in the shot put event. Charley Cantrell was runner-up in both the 400 and 800 meter runs.

Logan Meyer captured first in the shot put while Dane Hoffman finished second in both the discus and shot put events to lead the Wolverine boys to sixth place with 33 points.

Amos Schmidt was the top finisher for Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale with a pair of firsts in the boys hurdle events.

Senior Tracy Perish powered the Browerville/Eagle Valley girls track team to fourth place (66 points) with a pair of firsts in the distance runs. She also placed second in the long jump. Kayla Dreher won the 3200 meter run with a time of 12:34.34

Ottertail Central had numerous first place finishers. On the boys’ side, the Bulldog tandem of DJ Cline and Rusty Duncan finished one-two in both the 400 and 800 meter runs. Sadie Ellenson captured the 400 meter crown for the girls while Samantha VanErp had a winning triple jump distance of 32’5” and Kari Stroh 87’1.5” in the discus.
