The Wadena-Deer Creek volleyball team picked up its 12th consecutive and 47th straight victory with the sweep of New York Mills during Tuesday’s non-conference match in Wadena.
“We came out strong and finished strong,” New York Mills head coach Amy Koskela said. “Tonight was the most net play we’ve had all year.”
The Lady Eagles came out strong in the first set, but with the score tied at 4-4, back-to-back kills from Brittney Noon put Wadena-Deer Creek ahead for good.
New York Mills was briefly rattled when Ellie Rutten landed wrong on her ankle during a block attempt midway through the set and had to be helped off the court.
Wadena-Deer Creek took advantage of the gap in the Lady Eagles’ defense to build their lead by 10 points (17-7) on a pair of kills from Emily Miron.

Rutten returned with her right ankle taped at the start of the second set. Hope Theisen started off with an ace serve and the Lady Wolverines raced to an 17-4 lead. Miron notched five kills during the span, with Noon registering three.
Heather Theisen stepped up to the service line and went 6 for 6 with two aces while an Avery Jackson ace and Miron block pushed the Lady Wolverines’ lead to 20-9.
The Lady Eagles would tack on another three points, but an service error gave the set to Wadena-Deer Creek, 25-12.

Sydney Schissel took her turn at the service line during the start of the third set and proceed to rattle off 18 straight points for the Lady Wolverines. The sophomore tallied five aces during the span—and would finish with a perfect 29 for 29 serving on the night. Miron contributed four kills and a block with Halley Maas adding a kill during the long outburst.
Rutten stopped Schissel’s run with one of her match-high 14 blocks.
The Lady Wolverines made it 23-2 when Jackson went 4 for 4 with a pair of aces, but the Lady Eagles made an spirited effort to close out the match. Tori Kempenich tallied four kills as New York Mills went on a 6-1 run.
Noon finished off the Lady Eagles with her team-high 14th kill for the match point.
Both teams will resume action on Thursday when Wadena-Deer Creek (12-0) travels to Sauk Centre and New York Mills (5-10-1) heads to Verndale. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
