Prep Wrestling: Staples-Motley pins back the Raiders, 52-27

Second-ranked Colin Turchin scored a pin at 1:12 over David DeYoung in the heavyweight match, but Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale still fell to the host Staples-Motley Cardinals 52-27 in a dual meet Thursday night.

The Cardinals picked up six pins and two forfeits during the key section showdown.
Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale’s only lead of the night came from Justin Gordan, who notched five points with a technical fall over the Cardinals’ Austin Pogreba in the opening match.

Staples-Motley countered by winning the next four to assume control, getting falls from Blake Miller (112), Josh Becker (119) and Jordan Heldman (130).

The Raiders trimmed the deficit to 28-15 with a pair of victories in the middle-weight matches. Hayden Truax (135) scored a 11-2 major decision over the Cardinals’ Tyler Pogreba and Dakota Finck pinned Tom Zoeller at 3:23 in the 145-pound match.

Staples-Motley ended up putting the score out of reach with a pair of Raider forfeits and two pins from Gavin Kadlec (160) and Chandler Trout (189). Raider Dylan Koppendrayer (215) received a forfeit win and Turchin’s fall capped the scoring.
