Semi-Pro Football: Screaming Eagles chop down Lumberjacks 24-10
Kyler Wegner scored three touchdowns and the Screaming Eagles defense forced five turnovers en route to dispatching the Brainerd Lumberjacks 24-10 on Saturday.
Wegner, the third-year running back out of Frazee, rushed for a pair of touchdowns from 26 and 27 yards. He also caught a 15 yard touchdown pass from Jason McCloskey early in the fourth quarter to wrap up the Screaming Eagles scoring.
Unofficially, Lakes Area racked up 317 yards of total offense, with McCloskey airing the ball for 194 yards on 17-for-23 passing and was intercepted three times.
He connected with wide receiver Bert Smith for a five-yard touchdown pass with under a minute remaining in the first quarter to spot the Screaming Eagles the 12-0 lead.
The Lumberjacks answered with a 50-yard scoring strike from quarterback Tom Hice to Geoff Niemi at the start of the second quarter to whittle the lead down to four at the half, 12-8.
The Screaming Eagles defensive corps took over in the second half to chop down any serious offensive rhythm by Brainerd. They intercepted Hice twice before the battered quarterback left with an injury in the third quarter. Lakes Area gave the Lumberjacks backup quarterback Mark Hummel a rude welcome on his first play, forcing him into a fumble and then picked him off twice.
Lakes Area, riding on a two-game winning streak, looks to improve their 2-2 record at home Saturday when they host the Menomonie Thunderhawks at 5 p.m.
