Track and Field: Area teams, individuals compete in subsection meet in Wadena
Area high school track and field teams took part in the Subsection 3, Section 6A meet held at Wadena-Deer Creek on Thursday. The top five individual finishers and the top two relay teams advanced to the Section 6A meet, which will be held on Thursday (June 3) at Minnesota State University-Moorhead.
United North Central lead the way with seven qualifiers in 12 events as the Warrior boys finished fifth in the team standings with 49 points. The Lady Warriors also scored 49 points, but finished seventh.
Four individuals garnered first place for United North Central. Tom Gruchow won the boys 200 meter dash in 24.04; Andrea Korvela took the girls 400 meter dash in 1:02.48. Alicia Boe and Jonathan Miller won their respective distance races, both took first in the 1600. All four individuals qualified in other events as well. Gruchow and Boe both finished fourth in the 400, with Korvela and Miller grabbing third in the 200 and 3200, repectively.
Also qualifying for sections were Joey Cuperus with second in the high jump (6’1”) and fourth the long jump (18’6.25”). Beth Tormanen was second in the girls triple jump (31’6”) and Kaitlyn Lien leaped into fourth in the girls high jump with an height of 4’9”.
Wadena-Deer Creek had three first-place finishers with senior Dane Hoffman and junior Rachel Craig leading the way. Both captured a pair of first-place finishes in the shot put and discus events.
Overall, the host Wolverines will advance six individuals and one relay team to sections.
Hannah Toedter also took first in the 3200 in 12:41.91, with Charley Cantrell third in the 1600 (5:43.38), Lindsey Eliason fourth in the 100 meter dash (13.98) and Neil Janson fifth in the 800 (2:11.38).
The lone Wadena-Deer Creek relay to advance was the girls 4x800 team of Cantrell, Emma Schmitz, Shaye Blessing and Toedter, which finished second in 10:24.57.
The Wolverine boys team came in seventh with 27 points while the Lady Wolverines were fourth with 60.50.
Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale also sent six qualifiers to sections in eight events. Both Raiders teams finished eighth, with the girls collecting 34 points and the boys 22.
Amos Schmidt and Kathryn VanDenheuvel were the highest individual finishers with second place. Schmidt turned in the second best time in the boys 300-meter hurdles with 40.87 and also took third in the 110-meter hurdles (16.84). VanDenheuvel leaped 4’9” in the girls high jump.
Finishing third for the Raiders were Samara Tobeck in the girls discus throw (85’8.5”), and Hannah Barrett in the 100-meter hurdles (17.50). Heather Lipisnski was fourth in the girls 200-meter dash (28.73). Barrett also qualified in the girls 300 hurdles (51.21) and Ray Demaars in the boys 100-meter dash (12.23), both finished fifth in those events.
