Womens College Basketball: Huskies fall to hot shooting South Dakota State, 74-35

Brookings, S.D. – South Dakota State University used the hot shooting of Jill Young and went on to defeat St. Cloud State 74-35 in the season opener for both teams Friday night in Brookings.
The Jackrabbites shot over 50 percent from the field and 62 percent from beyond the arc and jumped out to a 12-0 start.
South Dakota State, an NCAA Division I team and member of The Summit League is 1-0 while the Huskies season starts at 0-1. The loss spoiled a Homecoming for the Husky coaching staff as head coach Lori Fish and assistant coach Megan Vogel had standout four-year playing careers with the Jackrabbits and graduate assistant coach Tiffany Moe was a standout player at Brookings High School.
St. Cloud State senior guard Jordi Gerking (Spirit Lake, Iowa) broke into the scoring column with a three-point basket to give the Huskies their first points of the game at the 16:13 mark. Gerking led the Huskies in scoring with nine points.
The Huskies had a difficult shooting night, making 24.2 percent of their shots from the field. Senior post Christina Steele (Apple Valley) had six points for SCSU. First year forward Jessica Benson (Grand Meadow) had a team high five rebounds and sophomore forward Reyan Robinson (Becker) had four points and four rebounds. Junior guard Nicole Anderson (Cannon Falls) had five points.
The Huskies finished the game with 12 steals, led by senior post Aaryn Booker (Minneapolis) with three and forced 21 South Dakota State turnovers.
South Dakota State was led by Jill Young who scored 25 points and made seven three-point baskets. Jennie Sunnarborg added 11 points and a game high nine rebounds. The Jackrabbits shot 52.1 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from three-point range.
St. Cloud State continues its non-conference schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at Jamestown (N.D.) College.
