Once Menahga pitcher Lindsey White gets into a zone, all you could do is sit back and watch the junior work her magic on the mound.

White came out smoking in the Section 6A North playoff opener against sixth-seeded Frazee, retiring the first 10 Hornet batters on strikeouts before an Lady Brave error in the fourth allowed a runner.

The right-hander ended tossed 85 pitches in the game and finished with 16 strikeouts in seven innings. She did not issue a walk and surrendered just two hits.

The New York Mills girls softball team won both games by identical 5-2 scores over Pillager and Frazee to claim the Lady Hornet Softball Invitational on Saturday.

EmaLeigh Roberts went 3-for-4 and belted three doubles as the Lady Eagles pounded out 13 hits to win the opener over the Huskies.

Two of the three 2009 team champions return to defend their titles: the Simley Spartans in Class AA and the Apple Valley Eagles in Class AAA. Simley is looking for its third consecutive title, while Apple Valley is seeking its fifth straight title.

In the individual competition, 17 champions return for more gold medals—six in Class AAA, four in Class AA, and seven in Class A.

Both Courtney Volkmann and Avery Jackson dropped 14 points apiece and Hannah Toedter added 12 as the Lady Wolverines held off Frazee’s second half swarm to win 55-44 in non-conference action on Tuesday.

Wadena-Deer Creek led as much as 21 before the Lady Hornets started buzzing the baskets to pull within four points in the second half.

“It was a game of two halves,” Lady Wolverine coach Brian Silbernick said. “We didn’t shoot as well [in the second half] and took too many quick shots which helped Frazee get back into the game.”
