Brooklyn Park, Minn.— The Minnesota State High School League staff has completed production of an instructional video intended to demonstrate proper and improper checks and hits in hockey in a continuing effort to educate players, coaches, officials and fans so that potential injurious actions are reduced and ultimately eliminated from the game.

The 2011-12 boys' basketball season is under way with the first games of the season played within the last week. The girls have been playing for a week longer. The 2012 state tournaments are a little more than three months away.

Two team champions return this Saturday, Nov. 5, when the Minnesota State High School League’s 2011 State Girls’ and Boys’ Cross Country Running Meet is conducted at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The Perham boys and Adrian girls are both in the hunt for their second consecutive titles in Class A.

Teresa Moenkedick complied a team-high seven kills and 13 digs as Verndale served up 11 aces from the service line to breeze past the visiting Hillcrest Academy Comets 25-17, 25-15, 25-14 during a non-conference girls volleyball match Tuesday night.

Both Sarah Moenkedick and Elyssa Kern registered three ace serves for the Lady Pirates, who improved to 2-3 with their second consecutive victory of the season.

The methods for seeding competition at the section level for advancement to state tournaments have had one thing in common — they were consistently inconsistent.

That is changing effective this school year. All section team competition will now be seeded one of three ways — 1) point system; 2) face-to-face meetings of the coaches; or 3) an electronic process via computer, fax or telephone.

New York Mills won two matches and tied one en route to a fourth place finish in Saturday’s six-team Pelican Rapids Tournament.

The Lady Eagles dispatched Hillcrest Lutheran and Rothsay in two sets and earned a split with Battle Lake. They were swept by host Vikings and Lake Park-Audubon.

Individual stats for the Lady Eagles were not available.

New York Mills (3-4-1) hosts Henning at 7:30 p.m. Thursday
