A total of 49 wrestlers from the Beyond the Bleachers coverage area garnered trips to the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament that starts on Wednesday and runs through Saturday.

Two of the three 2009 team champions return to defend their titles: the Simley Spartans in Class AA and the Apple Valley Eagles in Class AAA. Simley is looking for its third consecutive title, while Apple Valley is seeking its fifth straight title.

In the individual competition, 17 champions return for more gold medals—six in Class AAA, four in Class AA, and seven in Class A.

Alexandria's scoring outburst buries Apollo 9-3

Alexandria recovered from a slow start by erupting for six goals in the third period to bury eighth-seeded St. Cloud Apollo 9-3 Tuesday night.

The Eagles gave the top-seeded Cardinals a scare when Brody Falconer and Jared Christen scored to give Apollo the 2-1 lead midway in the opening period.

Alexandria swept the Eagles’ upset bid out the door by icing eight consecutive goals—including six goals in the third period—and outshot Apollo 40-16.

Fergus Falls' Derek Kinder (15) intercepts a Flyer pass in the neutral zone during the Section 6A quarterfinal game with Little Falls Tuesday. Kinder scored the first goal of the game and then provided four assists in the Otters' 8-1 victory.

Mitch Gregory iced two goals and five different scorers found the back of the net as defending champion Little Falls Flyers bombed No. 11 seed Wadena-Deer Creek 7-0 in the Section 6A first-round playoffs Saturday.

The sixth-seeded Flyers wasted little time finding their scoring touch—they lit the lamp early and often with three goals on 15 shots in the first period.

Northern Lakes zaps Prairie Centre 8-1
Brady Roy lit up Prairie Centre Area for three goals and assisted on another as seventh-seed Northern Lakes advanced to Tuesday’s section quarterfinal game with No. 2 Sartell-St. Stephen.

Also garnering points for the Lightning were Conner Chambers with a goal and two assists; Cody Chambers had a goal and assist while Blake Demars, Collin Burke and Kyler Devent each had two helpers in the playoff win.
