The Eagles of New Life Academy of Woodbury in Class A and the Hawks of Hermantown in Class AA return to defend their respective titles. A new champion will emerge in Class AAA because Elk River, which won in 2009, failed to qualify for this year’s tournament.

Two teams are making their debut appearances at this year’s tournament, both in Class A: Blooming Prairie and Cherry/Cotton.

Menahga saved their best effort against Bertha-Hewitt in a game that really counted, as the Lady Braves stunned the Lady Bears 6-1 Tuesday to advance to the Section 6A championship game.

The South Subsection champion Lady Bears, who had defeated Menahga in a Park Region Conference doubleheader in the regular season by scores of 4-2 and 18-4, were undone by a five-run third inning outburst by the Lady Braves.

Prep Baseball: North Subsection 6A: Bertha-Hewitt eliminates Menahga 6-2
Ethan Bakken went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Dakota Aeling was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs as the third-seeded Bertha-Hewitt Bears used a five-run, fourth inning outburst to down sixth-seeded Menahga 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the North Subsection 6A playoffs Tuesday.

Menahga broke open the scoreless game in the top of the fourth on a RBI single by Stetson Burkman, but the Braves 1-0 lead would be short-lived.

Wolverine senior Dane Hoffman advanced to sections when he qualified in two events. He won the shotput with a toss of 42 feet, two inches and then blew past the state qualifiying mark in the discus by nearly 20 feet.

Jordan Iverson went 2-for-3, including a solo shot in the fifth inning as the top-seeded Hawley Nuggets slipped past third-seeded Menahga 4-2 in the North Subsection 6A championship game Thursday evening.

Macky Willits drove in a pair of runs and Allie Sorenson went 2-for-2 and scored three runs for Hawley, who improved to 18-1 despite missing two key players due to injuries.

Katie Miller drove in a run with a single and then scored on a Nugget error for the Lady Braves, who led 2-1 after the third inning.
