Katie Miller scored a team-high 16 points and Lindsey White added 13 but it wasn’t enough for ninth-seeded Menahga as they dropped a 74-41 West Sub-section 5A quarterfinal game to top-seeded Bertha-Hewitt Thursday night.

Menahga shot a frigid 24 percent (6-for-25) from the floor but made up for it with five three-pointers and converted 61 percent (14-for-23) of their free-throws. Miller had four three-pointers and White went seven-for-nine at the charity stripe.

Tarah Cleveland had a team-high 16 points to help ninth-seed Menahga get past No. 8 Browerville 63-43 in the pigtails of the West Sub-section 5A playoffs Tuesday night.

Menahga shot a low 36 percent (16-for-44) from the floor but made up for it by hitting six three-pointers and converting 86 percent (13-for-15) of their free-throws.

Two of the three 2009 team champions return to defend their titles: the Simley Spartans in Class AA and the Apple Valley Eagles in Class AAA. Simley is looking for its third consecutive title, while Apple Valley is seeking its fifth straight title.

In the individual competition, 17 champions return for more gold medals—six in Class AAA, four in Class AA, and seven in Class A.

Eagle Valley snapped Menahga’s two-game win streak in the 69-52 non-conference victory on Tuesday. It was the regular season finale for Lady Braves.

The Lady Braves shot a cold 32 percent (11-for-34) from the floor and were led by Tarah Cleveland’s team-high 26 points.

Beth Tormanen collected eight points with Arielle Pihlaja scoring seven and Katie Miller five for Menahga, who next play No. 8 Browerville in the West Sub-section 5A pigtails on Tuesday (March 2).

Tarah Cleveland becomes the seventh area basketball player to reach 1,000 career points Monday when she knocked down a game-high 37 points to lead Menahga past the host Browerville Tigers 69-54.

Tarah Cleveland dropped a game-high 24 points and Lindsey White scored 14 to help the host Menahga Lady Braves overcome a 26-21 halftime deficit to defeat Verndale 54-45 in Park Region Conference play Friday.

The Lady Braves used a flurry of second-half free-throws to sink the Lady Pirates. They converted 23-of-44 (52 percent) from the charity stripe. Menahga finished with 43 percent (14-for-32) from the floor on the evening.

Elizabeth Johnson led all Verndale scorers with 13 points in the loss.

Menahga (6-16) travels to Browerville at 7:30 p.m. Monday (today)

Derek Pihlaja scored a game-high 26 points and Marlin Aho and Tom Gruchow both posted double-doubles to help Menahga shoot down New York Mills 89-49 in a Park Region Conference game Thursday.

The Braves’ victory avenges an early season 76-72 overtime loss to the Eagles and puts them in a tie for third in the Park Region Conference standings.

New York Mills’ Hannah Rutten and Menahga’s Tarah Cleveland put on a high-scoring shooting clinic in the Lady Eagles’ 88-63 win in Thursday’s Park Region Conference matchup.

Rutten ended up scorching the nets for a game-high 37 points. The University of Minnesota-Duluth bound senior also hauled down a team-high 16 boards for her seventh consecutive double-double and 15th of the season.
