Midway provided all the fireworks on the diamond as Jake Lund tossed a seven-inning no-hitter in the 5-1 victory Saturday (July 3).

The game was shortened due because the home team wanted to get the team sponsored fireworks presentation under way and finished before a forecasted storm hit the area.

It would be the only fireworks the home team would provide to entertain the area crowd that night.

The Snurdbirds were held to six hits with Mike Baso going 2-for-4 with a double and run in the victory.

Midway needed all the power they could muster to unplug the visiting Nisswa Lightning 3-2 in 10 innings during Lake and Pine action Sunday.

After scattering 12 hits the day before in the 14-0 shut out win over the Red Eye Country Boys, Midway had trouble getting their bats going against Nisswa starter Brett Cloutier.

The Lightning pitcher handcuffed the Snurdbirds to just one run on three hits in six innings before turning the ball over to reliever Kyle Schaible to start the seventh.

Whew.

Area amateur baseball fans had to be shaking their heads after the Saturday game between Midway and Red Eye.

They just didn’t know whether they should be sympathizing with the hapless Country Boys or if they should marvel at the Snurdbirds ability to become the team to reckon with in the Lake and Pine League.

Midway literally smoked the Country Boys with a 10-run fifth inning outburst en route to the 14-0 shut out victory. It was the third shut out of the season for the ‘Birds.
