The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have signed right-handed pitcher Nick Blackburn to a four-year, $14 million contract. The deal also includes an $8 million club option for the 2014 season.

Blackburn was 11-11, 4.03 (205.2 ip, 92 er), allowing 240 hits with 41 walks and 98 strikeouts in 33 starts last season. He had 21 quality starts in 2009 and led the club in innings pitched, tied for the lead in starts and was second in wins. Blackburn has pitched 399.0 innings in the past two seasons.

The University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Twins announced Wednesday that the first-ever baseball game at Target Field will be played Saturday, March 27 when the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers host the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs at 1 p.m.

The Minnesota Twins announced Tuesday that they have agreed to terms with designated hitter Jim Thome on a one-year contract for the 2010 season, pending a physical.
 
Thome batted .249 (90-for-362) with 15 doubles, 23 home runs and 77 RBI in 124 games with the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers last season.
 
Since making his Major League debut in 1993, Thome has a career batting-average of .277 (2138-for-7706) with 412 doubles, 24 triples, 564 home runs and 1565 RBI.

The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have traded right-handed pitcher Boof Bonser to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for a player to be named later or cash.  

Bonser, 28, missed the entire 2009 season recovering from surgery on his right shoulder.  Since being acquired by the Twins from the San Francisco Giants on November 14, 2003, Bonser appeared in 96 games (60 starts) for the Twins, going 18-25, 5.12 (391.2 ip, 223 er) with 125 walks and 317 strikeouts.

The Minnesota Wild announced Tuesday that Minnesota Twins catcher and 2009 American League Most Valuable Player Joe Mauer will perform a ceremonial puck drop at approximately 7:05 p.m. tonight at Xcel Energy Center when the Wild takes on the Boston Bruins.

The Minnesota Twins were informed today that catcher Joe Mauer has been named the American League Most Valuable Player.

Mauer batted .365 (191-for-523) with 30 doubles, one triple, 28 home runs and 96 RBI in 138 games in 2009.  He missed the first month of the season with inflammation of the right sacroiliac joint.  Mauer led the league in batting, on-base percentage (.444) and slugging percentage (.587), becoming the first player (first catcher) in the American League since George Brett in 1980 to lead in all three categories.

The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have exercised the 2011 club option on right fielder Michael Cuddyer.

Cuddyer batted .276 (162-for-588) with 34 doubles, seven triples, 32 home runs and 94 RBI in 153 games for the Twins in 2009.  He established a career-high and led the club in home runs.  Cuddyer finished the season tied for sixth in the American League in extra-base hits (73), ninth in total bases (306), 10th in home runs and 15th in slugging percentage (.520).

The Minnesota Twins announced on Friday that they have acquired shortstop J.J. Hardy from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for outfielder Carlos Gomez.

Hardy batted .229 (95-for-414) with 16 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs and 47 RBI in 115 games for the Brewers in 2009. With 26 home runs in 2007 and 24 in 2008, he became the third shortstop in Brewers' history to hit more than 20 home runs in a season twice, joining Robin Yount and Jose Hernandez.
