The Minnesota State softball team opened its annual spring trip to the Rebel Spring Games with an offensive explosion as the Mavericks downed Shippensburg, 15-0, and Georgian Court, 6-1, Saturday. MSU will play 12 games in the next seven days during its stay in the Sunshine State.

In the opener, the Maverick pounded out eight hits and took advantage of for Shippensburg errors en route to the victory. Minnesota State scored four runs in the first inning, three in the third and closed the scoring with an eight-run fourth frame.

The #4 St. Cloud State University men’s hockey team (20-11-5, 15-9-4 WCHA) clinched third place in the 2009-10 WCHA regular season race with a 2-2 OT decision against Minnesota State University (15-18-3, 9-17-2 WCHA) on Saturday at the National Hockey Center.

The Huskies will now host first round action in the upcoming WCHA playoffs on March 12-14 at the National Hockey Center. The Huskies’ first round opponent will be determined by the results of tonight’s final WCHA regular season game between Alaska Anchorage and Minnesota Duluth.

The office of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association has announced the 2009-10 All-WCHA Academic Team, with Minnesota State leading the class for the second straight year with 15 awardees. The Mavericks have the most recipients out of the eight teams in the league. Ten Mavericks are repeat honorees.

To qualify for the All-WCHA Academic Team, student-athletes must have completed one year of eligibility at present institution, prior to the current academic year, and have a grade point average of at least 3.0 for the previous two semesters or three quarters.

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference released its 2009-2010 postseason awards today and the Mavericks were well represented.

The Minnesota State baseball team fell twice in nonconference twin bill Wednesday in the Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis.

The Mavericks dropped a 4-3 decision in the first game and then fell by a 5-1 margin in the night cap.

Sophomore righty Blake Schwartz tossed a one-hitter and Minnesota State opened a four-game non-conference series with Bemidji State by downing the Beavers, 6-0, at the Metrodome.
The Mavericks then proceeded to earn the sweep over the Beavers with a 3-1 decision in the second game.

In today's first game, Dan Bennett was the only BSU batter to reach base off of Schwartz, doing so with a two-out single in the third inning and a one-out, full-count hit by pitch in the sixth.
