For the first time since 1987, Minnesota will play a WCHA postseason series at North Dakota as the teams meet in a best-of-three series in the first round of the league playoffs. The winner will earn a berth to next weekend's WCHA Final Five at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

For the first time since 1987, Minnesota will play a postseason hockey game against North Dakota in Grand Forks as the teams will meet in a first round Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoff series March 12-14.

Minnesota State University welcomed North Dakota for a weekend tilt at All Seasons Arena in Mankato, Minn. The Mavericks entered Friday night’s game with a 6-19-5 record while the Fighting Sioux owned a 7-19-4 record.

A late second-period flurry that included the fastest two goals in Minnesota history lifted the Gophers to a 5-1 win over fourth-ranked North Dakota on Saturday at Mariucci Arena.
 
Tony Lucia and Jacob Cepis scored the fastest consecutive goals in Minnesota history late in the second period as the Gophers put away the Sioux with three goals in the final 5:09 of the frame. Lucia and Cepis scored just seven seconds apart, eclipsing the record of eight seconds by Larry Olimb and Lance Pitlick from Feb.

Minnesota turned the tables on North Dakota with a late goal in regulation to force overtime as the teams tied 3-3 for the second straight time on Friday at Mariucci Arena.
 
The Gophers tied the game on a goal by Jacob Cepis with 2:04 left in regulation and then fought off a North Dakota power play for the final 1:08 of overtime to emerge with the tie. On Oct. 17 of this season, the Fighting Sioux scored with 6:50 left in regulation as the teams also tied 3-3.

The second half of the conference season opens this weekend for the Gophers, who host North Dakota in a two-game series. Minnesota enters the weekend having won six of its last seven games and seven of the last nine.

The St. Cloud State University women's hockey team (2-6-0, 1-5-0 WCHA) gained its first WCHA victory of the 2009-10 campaign with a big 3-2 win over North Dakota (2-5-1, 2-5-1 WCHA) on Saturday at the National Hockey Center.

Senior forward Felicia Nelson (St. Paul) lifted the Huskies to the winner's circle with a pair of goals in the contest, including the game winner at 12:29 of the third period with an assist from senior forward Caitlin Hogan (Oakdale).  The goal was Nelson's third marker of the 2009-10 season.

The University of North Dakota (2-4-1, 2-4-1 WCHA) women's hockey team defeated St. Cloud State University (1-6-0, 0-5-0 WCHA) in overtime by a score of 5-4 on Friday in the National Hockey Center.

Senior forward Meaghan Pezon (Eden Prairie) had a career night for the Huskies, as
she erupted for two goals and two assists in the loss, bringing her career point total to 63 (32G, 31A) in 107 games played in the Cardinal and Black. Pezon’s four points tonight mark a new personal career-high mark for most points scored in a single game.
