Royalton rode behind workhorse running back Zach Lanners en route to a 45-7 non-conference, season-opening victory over the host New York Mills Eagles Thursday night.

The senior racked up 127 yards rushing on 12 carries and scored four touchdowns as the Royals built up a 32-0 halftime lead.

Brian Schlichting had a pair of rushing touchdowns in the second half for Royalton, scoring on a 63-yard jaunt and three-yard run.

New York Mills was stung by the visiting Frazee Hornets in the season-opening, non-conference volleyball match Tuesday.

Frazee swept the Lady Eagles in three games by scores of 25-10, 25-16 and 25-13.
The Lady Eagles were led by a trio of sophomores in the loss. Libero Brooke Kupfer had a team-high 17 digs, setter Lexie Rankka came up with 12 digs and four set assists and Amy Nebosis collected two kills, an ace serve and five digs.

New York Mills won three of four singles matches in straight sets but were swept in the doubles as West Central Area defeated the Lady Eagles 4-3 on Friday.

The Lady Eagles were led by seniors Missy Hendrickx, Lauren Bach and Jen Maki, who scored victories in their singles matches. Hendrickx defeated the Lady Knights’ Nicole Anderson 6-3, 6-0; Bach defeated Jasmyn Sutton 6-2, 6-3 and Maki edged Sarah Frisch 7-5, 6-2.

Lauren Bach won her first two matches via super tiebreaker but dropped her championship match to finish runner-up at second singles as the Lady Eagles placed fifth in the Hi-way 10 Tournament in Brainerd Wednesday

Bach opened the tournament by squeaking past Jessica Zent of Stewartville 7-5, 3-6 (12-10). She then edged Katie Anderson of Detroit Lakes 6-4, 4-6 (10-6) before falling to Andrea Koskiniemi of Staples-Motley 2-6, 0-6.

The New York Mills girls tennis team got the 2010-11 season underway picking up one win and dropping two at the Osakis Quadrangular on Monday.

The Lady Eagles defeated Morris Area 5-2, before losing to Melrose 6-1 and Osakis 7-0.

Despite playing short-handed, the Lady Eagles won two of the four singles matches and swept the doubles to get the season off on a positive note in the win over the Tigers.

The New York Mills volleyball team passed out postseason awards and recognition to the players at their end-of-season team banquet last night.

 

The Lady Eagles had four players receiving Park Region Conference accolades.

The Ulen-Hitterdal volleyball team picked a good night to pick up their first win of the season as they stunned the sixth-seeded New York Mills Lady Eagles 3-0 during the North Subsection 6A playin game Thursday.

The No. 11 Lady Spartans came into the section playoffs with a 0-22-1 record and had only won two games all season.

All the games were closely contested but the third game was a marathon with Ulen-Hitterdal squeaking into the quarterfinals with the hard-fought 34-32 victory.

In their best offensive performance of the season, New York Mills racked up 34 points but it wasn’t enough to end their winless drought in the 36-34 overtime loss to Pillager in Prairie North Conference action Tuesday.
