The New York Mills girls tennis team partnered with teachers, parents, former players and community members for a very fun day of friendly doubles competition during the third annual Mills Open Celebrity Tennis Classic on Saturday.

The doubles tandem of Jenna Esala and Robert Williams claimed the championship title, with Kori Salo and Mary Lee Legried earning runner-up honors. Krista and Rich Guldseth took third place while Jordin and DuWayne Roberts finished fourth.

Abby Salo was the lone New York Mills girls tennis player to record a point as the Lady Eagles dropped a pair of dual meets this past week to Detroit Lakes and Pequot Lakes.

Salo posted a 2-6, 7-5 (11-5) victory over the Lakers’ Emma Maquire at fourth singles in the Lady Eagles’ 6-1 loss on Tuesday.

The New York Mills girls' tennis team extends a ‘come one, come all’ invitation to the community when the Lady Eagles host its 3rd Annual Mills Open Celebrity Tennis Classic on Saturday, October 1.

A lunch featuring burgers, hot dogs and more will be served at 12:00 p.m. with the tennis matches beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The New York Mills girls tennis team suffered a pair of dual meet losses this past week and finished off the busy week at the Prairie Conference Individual Tournament in Long Prairie, but failed to advanced past the first round of play.

The Lady Eagles’ home match on September 20 (Tuesday) with Wadena-Deer Creek was postponed due to rain, and will be made up on Monday, October 3 at 4:30 p.m.

New York Mills dropped three dual meets during a busy week of girls tennis action on the local courts, losing to Osakis, Parkers Prairie and Park Rapids Area.

The New York Mills wrapped up a week of girls tennis action at the annual Moose Invitational in Brainerd on Saturday.

On Thursday, the Lady Eagles entertain Prairie Conference rival Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa on the home courts but were shut out by the Jaguars.

The New York Mills girls tennis team shook up their line up a bit in Tuesday’s meet with Long Prairie-Grey Eagle-Upsala-Swanville, but it wasn’t enough to get the Lady Eagles their first win of the season.

“We shook up our line up a little today due to some nagging injuries and to give players an opportunity in different singles or doubles flights,” said New York Mills head coach Gary Bach.

New York Mills suffered a pair of 7-0 losses to Roseau and Thief River Falls in Wednesday’s triangular at Perham

“This was a tough day in the game scores for us,” Lady Eagles head coach Gary Bach said. “But our players competed and will learn from playing two tough northern teams like Roseau—our defending section champion and Thief River Falls, now in Class AA after the section realignment.”
