Coaches love to stress that defense wins championships, so much so that it has become a standard sports cliche. Of course, when that defense is as strong as that shown by Perham Saturday afternoon at the Breakdown Tip Off Classic, it makes perfect sense. The defending Class AA state champions stymied St. Thomas Academy much of the game in a 62-54 victory.

How about getting a glance at defending Class AA champion Perham, which takes on rising St. Thomas Academy?

Maybe a battle of top-rated big men when Osseo’s young Ian Theisen tips off with Prior Lake and Carson Shanks?

St. Paul Johnson and Hopkins will return to defend their and four teams will be making their first appearances when the 2011 Minnesota State Boys' Basketball Tournament is played this Wednesday through Saturday.

The coaches have selected the top seeds of the two largest school classes — St. Paul Johnson in Class AAA and Hopkins in Class AAAA.

Cody Pulju led all scorers with 22 points and John Clark posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds but it wasn’t enough as Class A, top-ranked Sebeka saw its 23-game win streak end at the hands of Class AA, sixth-ranked Perham 65-60 in a non-conference game Tuesday night.

“It was a great atmosphere for a game and I think the fans got their money’s worth with two teams really battling it out for 36 minutes.” Sebeka head coach Jon Lillquist said.
