Mankato West senior quarterback Philip Nelson was voted Minnesota Player of the Year when the 2011 Minnesota Associated Press All-State high school football team was announced Tuesday.

Nelson completed 174 of 262 passes for 2,784 yards with 35 touchdowns, breaking the Scarlets' single-season records for yards and touchdown passes. He also rushed for 1,243 yards and 20 touchdowns this season.

Perham had six players receiving postseason accolades when the 24 member Heart O’ Lakes All-Northern Conference Team was announced today.

The Yellowjackets (9-4) went 5-1 in conference games to capture the HOL Northern Division title. Perham won the Section 8AAA championship, but fell to Providence Academy 28-19 in the quarterfinals of the Minnesota State Football Tournament.

ST. CLOUD—Marshall Klitzke rushed for three touchdowns as Providence Academy used a big second quarter to beat Perham 28-19 in the Class AAA state quarterfinals Saturday at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud.

All of Klitzke’s touchdown runs came during the Lions’ 21-point outburst in the second quarter that erased Perham’s 6-0 first quarter lead.

Three teams return to defend their 2010 football titles — Caledonia in Class AA, and both Totino-Grace of Fridley and Wayzata in Class AAAAA. Totino-Grace won in Class AAAA last year, but opted up to Class AAAAA this year.

Sixteen teams that competed in the 2010 tournament have qualified again, while six teams are making their first appearances. Thirteen teams enter with unblemished records.

Jordan Hein punched in from one-yard out with 4:04 left in the first half to give Perham the points they needed to slip past Pequot Lakes 10-3 during the Section 8AAA final Thursday night at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, ND.

Nolan Michaelson rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns to help power host Pequot Lakes past Perham 25-14 in Heart O’ Lakes Conference action Friday night.

The Patriots’ senior running back scored on touchdown runs of three, 31 and three yards as both teams did all their scoring in the first half.

The Yellowjackets’ Jordan Hein scored on a three-yard run and then found Mike Wiskow for a 48-yard scoring strike late in the second quarter.

Jordan Hein rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns and threw for another 124 yards and two scores as Perham gained 599 total yards of offense during Friday’s 46-31 homecoming shoot-out victory over Crookston.

The Perhma defense tied a team record with four interceptions in the game—with two picks leading to ‘Jacket touchdowns.
