Two of the three 2009 team champions return to defend their titles: the Simley Spartans in Class AA and the Apple Valley Eagles in Class AAA. Simley is looking for its third consecutive title, while Apple Valley is seeking its fifth straight title.

In the individual competition, 17 champions return for more gold medals—six in Class AAA, four in Class AA, and seven in Class A.

Perham, which is the six-time defending Class A champion, returns in search of more gold when the 2010 State Girls' Gymnastics Meet opens at the Sports Pavilion on the University of Minnesota campus on Friday. Five other qualifying teams also return from last year's Class A field. In Class AA, three teams, including the four-time defending champions from Roseville Area, return from the 2009 field.

Hannah Rutten secured another double-double with her game-high 29 points and team-high 15 boards to help the Class A, ninth-ranked Lady Eagles squeak past Class 2A Perham 68-67 in non-conference action Friday.

Both teams shot 47 percent from the field but New York Mills won the game from the charity stripe as they converted 63 percent (10-for-16) of their free throws compared to 50 percent (7-for-14) for the Lady ‘Jackets.

Elisa Moenkedick and Steph Miller both lit up the scoreboard with 16 points apiece as the visiting Perham Yellowjackets rolled to a 58-41 non-conference victory over host Wadena-Deer Creek Thursday.

Moenkedick gave the Lady Wolverines’ defense fits in the first half as the senior dropped 14 points in the frame to carry the Yellowjackets to a 12-point halftime lead, 29-17.

The Heart O’ Lakes All-Conference teams and individual awards were announced on Wednesday.
 
Staples-Motley led the Classic Conference with six players selected to the all-conference team, with Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton adding five to the honor roll.
