Four Sebeka Trojan baseball players landed on the 2010 State All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the Class A championship game at Target Field on Saturday.
Representing the Trojans were seniors Alex Brockphaler and Josh Kinnunen, junior Brenen Brockphaler and sophomore Paul Funk.
 
Alex Brockpahler went 1-1 on the mound for the Trojans in the tournament. The senior allowed 11 runs (nine earned) and surrendered 15 hits in 13 innings. He walked six and struck out 13 in his two appearances.

Sebeka started strong in the Class A State Championship game, racking up a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, but the undefeated, and No.1-ranked Eden Valley-Watkins Eagles took flight the rest of the game to score five unanswered runs en route to winning the title, 7-4.

The Trojans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Josh Kinnunen laced an RBI single to left field and Cody Pulju followed with and RBI double into the left-center gap.

Cody Pulju’s only hit of the game turned out to be a winner.

With the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, the junior delivered a two-out, RBI single to give Sebeka the 5-4 victory over Deer River in the semifinals of the State Class A Tournament Thursday evening at the Mini Met in Jordan.

Sebeka erupted for 13 hits to dispatch the Southland Rebels 12-3 in the quarterfinals of the State Class A Boys Baseball tournament Thursday morning.

The Brockpahler brothers (Alex and Brenen) combined to go 5-for-7 with a double and three RBI while Cody Pulju and Taylor Pederson both collected two hits and drove in three runs to pace Sebeka at the plate. Josh Kinnunen rounded out the list of Trojans with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

In the 11th year of a three-class format, a new baseball champion will emerge in Class A and in Class AAA. La Crescent will attempt to defend its Class AA title. Two teams are making first appearances: Deer River and Fosston, both in the Class A tournament.

Wolverine senior Dane Hoffman advanced to sections when he qualified in two events. He won the shotput with a toss of 42 feet, two inches and then blew past the state qualifiying mark in the discus by nearly 20 feet.

New York Mills continued their late season resurgence by winning both games of the Park Region Conference doubleheader against Sebeka on Thursday.

The Lady Eagles belted out 16 hits and collected four doubles to hand the Lady Trojans a 9-4 defeat in the opener.

New York Mills had each player in the order garner at least a hit with Jenna Esala doing the most damage at the plate. The sophomore went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs while Samantha Welter also scattered three hits and had a double.

Area track and field teams converged in Frazee for the annual Daggett Invitational on Thursday with numerous individual participants garnering top placements for their respective school teams.

Amos Schmidt won the 110 and 300 meter hurdles and Kathy VanDenheuvel tied for second in the high jump for Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale. The Raider boys team finished sixth with 29 points while the girls were 11th with nine points.

Grand Rapids placed three in the top five individually as the Thunderhawks dominated the United North Central Invitational at Blueberry Pines by 30 strokes over runner-up Detroit Lakes on Thursday.

Thunderhawk Mikky Kromy fired a 38 on the front nine, and then took one stroke off her score in the back nine to card a 75 for medalist honors. Grand Rapids’ Steph Mackey placed second individually with 81 (41-40) and Katie Sheetz fourth with 85 (42-43).
