Katrina Newman dropped a game-high 29 points to help the second-ranked Barnum Bombers blow past Sebeka en route to the Section 5A title on Friday.

Newman, one of the top prolific scorers in the state, fueled the Bombers fast start in the first half with 15 points as Barnum raced to a 43-20 halftime lead. The senior ranks in the top statewide in scoring with 23.4 points per game average.

Barnum avenged a loss to the Lady Trojans earlier this season. Katrina Newman did not play in that game due to a knee injury.

Both the New York Mills and Sebeka girls basketball teams fell short of a state tournament berth when they lost tonight in their respective section championship games.

The Class A, seventh-ranked Lady Eagles (North Subsection champions) lost 66-47 to defending champion and fifth-ranked Parkers Prairie (South Subsection) in the Section 6A finals held at the University of Minnesota-Morris campus.

Sebeka pulled a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde performance en route to upsetting top-seeded Bertha-Hewitt 63-55 in the West Subsection 5A title game Tuesday in Wadena.

Bertha-Hewitt was pretty much in control of the game in the first half, until the second-seeded Lady Trojans made a run just before halftime to trim the Lady Bears’ lead down to six, 36-30.

Jessica Lillquist accounted for half of the Lady Trojans’ first-half points. The sophomore tallied 16 points while senior Betsy Olson was limited to just eight points in the span.

Betsy Olson led all scorers with a game-high 30 points but it wasn’t enough for Sebeka to overcome host Pequot Lakes in Tuesday's 85-75 non-conference loss.

Olson scored 21 points in the first half and went eight-for-nine at the stripe.

Leave it to Sebeka to muddle up the Park Region Conference race with the surprising 51-48 victory over fifth-ranked Bertha-Hewitt on Friday.

With the win, the Lady Trojans inserted themselves in the thick of the conference standings and have a chance to do more damage when current leader New York Mills invades the Sebeka home court on Monday, March 1 in the regular season finale.

But first, Sebeka had to get past the Lady Bears, a team that trounced them back in January by a score of 73-40.
